Many highly regarded artists have contributed their talents, creating a series of spectacular ethnic heritage murals that dramatically detail the area's history. A large portion of the murals can be found on the retaining walls adjacent to Joliet's railway viaducts, while others are located on community center buildings.

Joliet's strong musical heritage is manifested in an abundance of live music in the town's banquet halls, restaurants, and taverns. An exceptional high school music program has resulted in a strong local musical community. Local bands range from blues, jazz, rock, folk, country, swing, and cabaret music. Most of the city's festivals and community events include music. Joliet's gambling boats are also a source of professional-quality music entertainment.

Those who enjoy the performing arts need look no further than the Rialto Square Theatre. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and cited as one of the 10 most beautiful theatres in the world, the Rialto is a former vaudeville and movie palace. The Rialto was built in 1926 during the golden age of theatre, and its architecture reflects the best elements of Italian Renaissance, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Rococo, Venetian, and Baroque styles. Some of the finest replicas of early European design can be viewed at this theatre, which remains an active center for the performing arts with nearly a hundred events held each year, ranging from the ballet to ice capades performances.

The stately historic Jacob Henry, Hiram B. Scutt and Patrick C. Haley mansions offer a look into the past. Many special events are also offered at these beautiful and historic homes.

Joliet's Union Station is also listed in the National Registry of Historic Places, and is one of the cornerstones of the revitalized City Center. Built in 1912, this structure has many distinguishing architectural features.

The city of Joliet is home to many historic buildings. The main branch of the Joliet Public Library is housed in a historic, circa-1903 building designed by acclaimed architect Daniel Burnham.

The Joliet Public Library system is comprised of two facilities and boasts more than 300,000 volumes. Other materials at the libraries include audio and videotapes, magazines and newspapers from across the nation, reference materials, and more. The Joliet Public Library is a member of the Heritage Trail System, offering patrons access to resources at area libraries through an interlibrary loan program.
